You don’t need a referral from your own doctor. A licensed physician on our medical team reviews your health questionnaire, confirms the scan is right for you and orders it. We’ll ask for your OB-GYN’s or midwife’s details so that, with your consent, we can share your results with them.

We recommend booking your scan between 18 and 36 weeks. This is the period covered by our growth reference charts for the baby, the placenta and the amniotic fluid (Prayer, Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol, 2023; Bouachba, Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol, 2025).

Usually not. Wear comfortable clothes without metal, remove your jewelry and empty your bladder before the scan. Please tell us when you book if you have a pacemaker, an implant or any metal fragment in your body, as some devices are not compatible with MRI.

In most cases, yes. Let us know when you book. The team talks with you throughout the scan, you hold a call button the whole time, and you can stop whenever you need to.

That’s completely normal. Each image is captured in under a second, which freezes movement. If an image is blurred, we simply repeat it.

Yes, your partner is welcome at the center, though they usually can’t enter the MRI room itself. You’re never alone: you can talk with the team at any moment through an intercom, and healthcare professionals watch over you for the whole scan.

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, so there is no ionizing radiation. Large studies have found no harm to babies. In a study of 1.4 million births, the 1,737 babies exposed to MRI early in pregnancy showed no increase in birth defects, childhood cancer, or vision or hearing loss up to age 4. Another study followed 131 children exposed to MRI before birth and 771 unexposed children up to age 6, and found the same development in both groups. Major obstetric guidelines state that MRI without contrast dye has no known harmful effects at any stage of pregnancy, and we never use contrast dye (Ray, JAMA, 2016; Zvi, AJNR, 2020; ACOG, Obstet Gynecol, 2017; Prayer, Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol, 2023).

The scanner is loud for you, so you’ll wear earplugs or headphones. For your baby, your body and the amniotic fluid greatly reduce the sound. In a study of 751 newborns exposed to MRI in the womb, none had hearing loss, a rate no higher than among more than 10,000 unexposed newborns (Strizek, Radiology, 2015). Results were consistent with 3 Tesla (3T) scanners, the highest field strength used in routine clinical imaging, and follow-up hearing tests at around age 2 confirmed normal hearing (Strizek, Radiology, 2015; Chartier, AJR, 2019; Bouyssi-Kobar, Pediatr Radiol, 2015)
